Today’s treat: Kale 🥬

Happy world bee day! Swipe to see some of the pollinators that I have seen in our backyard this week. Of course honey bees too but these pals deserve the spotlight since they are often over looked!

Oh man — check out the beard on the Post hive today!
What would you rate this beard… 10/10?
Let’s talk bearding: what it is and why it happens.
Bearding is completely normal bee behavior, especially during hot weather. When temperatures rise, worker bees gather outside the hive to help reduce heat and regulate the temperature inside. This helps keep the brood at a safe temperature so they can continue developing properly.
And no — bearding doesn’t automatically mean the hive is preparing to swarm. A crowded beard on a hot day is often just the bees trying to stay cool.
Want to reduce bearding? Increasing the hive ventilation can help. There are lots of ways to do it, but personally I prefer cross-ventilating the hive or slightly propping open the top cover to improve airflow.
Have you ever seen your bees bearding?
Distance: precise. Directions: immaculate. Vibes: unmatched. Everybody act natural, the honey flow should be starting!

POV: you’ve been queen rearing for 4 years and STILL panic every time you graft 😅🐝
Every single time I graft I get that little panic of:
“Will this go well?”
Does anybody else get irrationally stressed during grafting or is it just me?

These are the things that keep me up at night.
The constant buzzing in my sleep after a long day of beekeeping combined with these is not the vibe I’m looking for.

Where is my husband?
Oh… in a honeybee world, there isn’t one
Just a queen and her sisters, humming through golden afternoons, building their colony and taking care of everything themselves 🍯🌼
This colony is looking fantastic so far this season! Queen and brood pattern is very solid! Definitely something I want to see more of!

Tried to melt down some old wax frames… and ended up with this instead 😅
Brought out the solar wax melter (she’s a little past her prime), but with a cracked pane, the heat couldn’t stay in. Instead of fully melting, it just softened everything enough to warp the plastic foundations.
Not exactly the result I was going for—but a good reminder:
Make sure your melter is sealed tight before loading frames/wax… or prepare for some very wonky foundations
#beekeeperfail #beewax #solar #learningexperience #honeybee
Looks like a lawn care ad… but this May, we’re doing the opposite 🌱
We’re Skipping the mow and giving pollinators a chance to thrive.
Not mowing this month means more blooms, more food, and better habitat for bees when they need it most since forage is still scarce.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your lawn… is nothing.
Are you in for No Mow May?

After coming back from Amsterdam and Apimondia last fall I knew I wanted to add some tulips to our gardens. It has been so fun watching them. And deciding which type we should grow. How many tulips do you think we planted???

This isn’t just another problem. It’s the problem.
Varroa mites are one of the biggest threats to honey bee colonies—and spring growth means their populations are about to pop off too.
If you’re not actively managing mite levels, you’re risking weak colonies, disease spread, and potential collapse.
Stay ahead. Monitor. Treat when needed.
What’s your go-to method for keeping mite levels under control?
#beekeeping #varroamites #honeybees #hivemanagement #spring
The only smoking I’ll be doing today will be for the bees…
Making sure you have your smoker available during each inspection is very important. It masks the alarm signals and encourages bees to stay calm, so each inspections are smoother and less stressful for everyone involved.

One of the best parts of beekeeping? Moments like this afterwards.
Watching the girls casually forage, the quiet buzzing, and the faint smell of honey—it all just slows everything down.

It finally feels like spring is here! The nice weather has finally arrived! And there are so many flowers starting to bloom!
I’m so excited to start seeing the girls foraging again. (And all the native bees that are emerging)
Unrushed, unbothered… just the girls doing there thing.

Hot take: we need less manicured lawns and more wildflower lawns 🌼🐝
Those “messy” spaces aren’t messy at all — they’re full of life.
Wildflowers provide food, shelter, and essential nutrients for pollinators that keep ecosystems (and our food supply) going
Nature was never meant to be perfectly trimmed.

Did you know bees choose “dirty” water on purpose?
Those puddles are packed with minerals, salts, and nutrients they need:
• Keep hydrated
• Feed the hive, including growing larvae
• Support honey processing
• Help fight off disease
The next time you see a bee at a muddy puddle, remember — it’s a superfood in disguise!

Let’s talk spring!
Warm weather and flowers are starting to blossom. As the days get longer I’ll start to take a closer look at what the trees are saying.
And they are saying spring is coming. How do I know! Well the trees are budding and in a few short weeks they will start to flower. Which the bees will start to collect pollen and nectar from! Which will mean it’s will be beekeeping time again!!
Spring starts off slow then all the sudden everything is green! Take a moment to look around and see if you can see the beginning signs of spring.
#signsofspring
#blooms
#bee
#flowers
#sunsets
After months of cold, clustering tight, surviving off stored food the bees are almost through winter. The last push!
Soon the sun will stay a little longer.
Soon the maples will bud.
Soon everything will be in bloom.
If they can endure the long, quiet season — so can you.
Spring is proof that survival turns into growth.
The buzz is coming back.
The bloom is coming back.
And so are you.
GIRL!!! ✨
I am SO excited for this season — there is so much in the works and so many exciting things happening!

Bees are scary… or are they?
Once you actually start learning about honey bees, you’ll probably realize that statement couldn’t be further from the truth. The more you understand them, the more you see how intelligent, organized, and honestly… incredible they are!!
Instead of fear, let’s choose curiosity.
Instead of myths, let’s share facts.
Let’s start the conversation about spreading awareness of bees and the impact they have on everything — our food, our flowers, and our future. #FearToFascination

Have you been thinking about getting into bees?
Take this as your sign — you should!! (You won’t regret it)
With spring on the horizon this is the perfect time to start. The hives haven’t built up yet, and flowers haven’t bloomed, and it’s the best season to set yourself up for success.
Not sure where to start? Start simple.
Learn the basics.
Understand hive setup.
Get familiar with bee behavior.
And here’s the best part — you don’t have to figure it out alone. There are so many experienced beekeepers out there who love to teach, mentor, and answer questions.
You don’t have to know everything — you just have to start! #StartBeekeeping

Day 22: strangest thing I have seen in a hive is a yellow eye drone. After doing some digging it is a recessive trait that cause the down to be blind. So once he goes out for a flight he won’t be able to find his way home, sad
#31day25 #31daysofbeekeeping
Day 21: My journey with bees started in 2016, when I decided to join my college beekeeping society at the freshman activity fair. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. But dove straight into helping out, so much so that I took over when the president graduated that spring. I am very grateful to have joined as it has opened the door to so many possibilities that I currently have. And would 10/10 sign up again today if I had to redo everything!
Fun fact I only signed up for the club as my nickname is B and I found it funny. Of course B has to join a beekeeping society as that’s where B’s belong.
I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to travel the world for beekeeper and make so many lovely friends!
#31dob25 #31daysofbeekeeping
Day 19: Bee Art!
This has been something I’ve been working on for a bit now, and I’m so happy with how it came out! I’m excited to share “What’s on Tap” — my first t-shirt!
My first hive design was a pub, so it’s only fitting that my first t-shirt design is pub-related too! Wouldn’t it be amazing if we had honey bars where people could come up and get a pint of their favorite honey? Maybe one day! Until then, these t-shirts will have to do 🍯🍻! Slàinte
#31dob25 #31daysofbees #whatsontap #pub #honey
Day 18: weirdest non-beekeeper interaction
When someone learns I’m a beekeeper the first question is always. do you get stung? Does it hurt? How many times have you been stung?
When doing a news interview last year I asked that exact question 🫣 people are always shocked no matter how I answer the question. Sometime they jump into their car and speed away in fear….. yes that has also happened before. But that’s a story for another day
#31dob25 #31daysofbeekeeping #beesting
Day 17: If I wasn’t a beekeeper what would I be?
Honestly I love beekeeping and it has felt like I was always on this path. But if I suddenly couldn’t work the bees anymore I would want to be come a wildlife conservationists. Educating other on the importance of wildlife and how everything is connected. Has always been what I wanted to do with my life! #31dob25 #31daysofbeekeeping
Day 13: Beekeeping Superstitions ?????
I always have to wave to the bees when I’m driving by them — it’s my little good luck ritual.
It feels like saying hi to old friends and making sure they know I still appreciate all their hard work. I never want them to think I’m not appreciative and decide they don’t want to live anymore. 🍯🌻 #31dob25 #31daysofbeekeeping #supersition
Day 11: I’m not picky when it comes to hive tools as they are somehow always missing as long as they have some type of hook I can work with it. I did have to find these two before take this picture. Always have to have a back up hidden hive tool around! They are somehow always missing. Where was the craziness place you found your hive tool???#31dob25 #31daysofbeekeeping #lost #hivetool
Day 9: Do I talk to my bees, of course I do!! Together we come up with lots of bees songs and I share my appreciation for their hard work each time I see them. Don’t want them to think I’m ignoring them. They have lots to say! #31dob25 #31daysofbeekeeping #beepuns
DAY 8! Blindfolded bee drawing challenge!! Abstract art! I mean it could have been worst, I’m going to name her Jet! And shes going to have a great life! Swipe to see jet and all her glory! ##31dob25 #31daysofbeekeeping #blindfoldedchallenge #abstractart
Day 6: My favorite bee book! Well that depends on the reading situation. I love my little collection of bee books! From educational books to children book there’s so many bee books that I’m slowly collecting! Realizing I need some more fictional beekeeping book. 📖 #31dob25 #31daysofbeekeeping
Day 5: Not so physically painful but pridefully painful. This spring I was called to catch a swarm in a tree. Turns out this tree had three swarms!
And I didn’t have enough nucs to put all the swarms into. All I had left was a hive box, the two smaller swarms went into a nuc each.
Lesson learnt always have more equipment available then needed and if you have to catch a swarm above your head make sure the box is behind where you’re going to shake.
Luckily I did put a sheet down on the ground so not the worst but can check off taking a bee shower off my to do list. Who else have had a bee shower? #31dob25 #31daysofbees #beekeeperlife🐝 #bee #shower
Day 4! My favorite pollinating flower……… is a year long garden. Being able to see a something flower though out the whole year. Who doesn’t want to see all sorts of pollinators around?!? #31dob25 #31daysofbees #pollenator #beekeeperlife🐝
Day 3: One of my favorite places where bees were but shouldn’t have been is a hole in one! This cute little swarm happened last year and I jumped on chance to collect them. Should of played the hole before collecting but couldn’t of gotten a better score t#31dob25 #31daysofbees
Day 2! My perfect beekeeping day is really any days that it’s not raining and above 55! But also sometime beekeeping when it’s raining is peaceful (of course with a pop-up tent overhead) Here is an install I did back in 2022 on a lovely spring day! For me any day I get to spend with the bees is an ideal day! #31dob25 #31daysofbees
Hi all! I am Bridgette and this is my eight season beekeeping! I am grateful that everyday i get to work with the girls and continue to improve my skills! Varroa mites reproduce under brood capping, multiplying with every new bee. Without treatment, they can spread fast, carrying deadly viruses and collapsing colonies. Strong hives start with strong mite management. Can you spot the varroa mite in this photo? 🔎🕵️♀️
Ever seen the sign of a newly mated queen? After three years of beekeeping, this is my first time seeing this! So what is this phenomenon? It’s the drone’s endophallus that is left after mating. It confirms the queen’s successful flight and that she’s now storing millions of sperm to fuel years of egg-laying. A well-mated queen is the foundation of colony health, brood strength, and honey production.
